研究：大象能經由聲音辨別威脅等級

大象的大耳朵不只是好看而已，根據10日公佈的研究結果，大象的耳朵可以分辨人類的聲音，以判斷是否具威脅性；此外，大象也能夠根據聲音來判斷年齡、性別和種族。

英國薩塞克斯大學(University of Sussex)和「安博塞利大象信託」(Amboseli Trust for Elephants)的研究人員，在肯亞對野生大象播放人類聲音，並觀察象群的反應。

研究結果發表在「美國國家科學院院刊」(Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America，PNAS)。

根據研究，大象可以清楚的分辨兩個不同族群的聲音，以及聲音所呈現出的威脅程度。

研究指出，象群在聽到肯亞馬賽(Maasai)族人的聲音時，比較會聚集成攻擊狀態。幾個世紀以來，馬賽族獵捕大象數量多於其它族群。

研究進一步指出，大象除了能分辨族群外，還能判斷性別和年齡。如果聲音是來自馬賽族的婦女或男孩，象群的攻擊反應會減弱。

研究者指出，這是首次證實大象能夠分辨人類聲音，而其它尋求避免獵捕的動物也可能發展出這種能力。
