日本宮崎縣『都城島津傳承館』日前首次向公眾展示了島津家族從江戶時代傳承至今的『河童手足』。由於實物已經變成木乃伊，『河童手足』的真偽成為關照焦點。傳承館表示不打算鑑定其真偽，『希望大家親眼來確認』。

中新網據日本《產經新聞》報導，此次公開的木乃伊化的河童手足有兩隻，一隻長8公分，另一隻長15公分，傳承館並沒有明確指出哪一隻是手，哪一隻是腳，傳說中的手足蹼也沒有。

據傳承館透露，大約在1818年-1830年期間，一名侍衛在現在的宮崎縣三股町的河岸邊槍殺了河童，之後便身患重病，一名友人為祈禱其康復特意請來巫醫，該侍衛隨即康復。作為答謝禮，這名友人收到了『河童』的手足，並將它獻給了都城的島津家族。

2004年，都城島津家將河童手足和1萬件古文書、工藝品捐贈給了都城市。據悉，此次展示活動截止於6月22日。

島津家族因2008年日本NHK播出大大河劇《篤姬》而被大家所熟知，島津家族在歷史上的全盛期時曾以薩摩國為中心統治了整個南九州。而宮崎縣的都城則是他們的發祥地。
